Blue recycle bins line the street on Hickok Ave in Syracuse. The bin were not picked up on the day they were supposed to. This was because of a shortage of working sanitation trucks. Dennis Nett | dnett@syracuse.com
With regard to articles last April in syracuse.com as well one by OCRRA’s Executive Director Kevin Spillane in their Summer 2022 newsletter predicting the phase out of the traditional blue bin in favor of a giant, 95-gallon storage bin for recyclable materials: Hold on folks. Not everyone needs a giant recycle container.
Finding room in a single garage for one of these behemoths may be next to impossible. And decorating the exterior of one’s home with trash and recycle containers looks tacky.
Further, not everyone has that much recyclable material. I rarely completely fill my traditional blue bin to the point where I need to use a second bin. It would likely take me two or three months to fill one of the giant containers.
For the people who want and can use a super-sized recycle container, great. Give it to them. But make it optional for those of us who have no need.
